Mi'kmaq elders are teaming up with parents and children to turn storytelling into children's books. The $6,000 project, spearheaded by the Kjipuktuk Aboriginal College in Halifax, is one of 10 initiatives to get funding from a new family literacy endowment fund. The recipients were announced Thursday to coincide with Family Literacy Day in Nova Scotia. "There are very few books that reflect Mi'kmaq heritage and culture for parents to read to their children,'' said Cheryl Lynn Hagan Deschamps, the college's family literacy co-ordinator. Workshops will be held in various First Nations communities around the province in the coming months. Parents will hone their literacy skills by producing four books based on storytelling sessions. Children will illustrate the books, which will be published in English and Mi'kmaq. Hagan Deschamps said the college, based at the Micmac Native Friendship Centre in Halifax, will share the books with day-care centres, kindergartens and other youth programs throughout Atlantic Canada.
