American Indian amateur boxers face Finland |

Among the 10 American Indian boxers are three local fighters, two from Shiprock and one from Chinle. The Native American Sports Council, a member organization of the United States Olympic Committee, is assembling the Native American Boxing Team to compete against Finland national team. The 10-card bout features American Indian's most promising amateur boxers and 2004 Olympic games hopefuls. The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribal Council sponsors and hosts many professional fights at their casino and are committed to support the resurrection of the Native American Boxing Championships. "In this event, thanks to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribal Council, 10 brave young talents will have the opportunity to prove their skills on an International stage," said Maurice 'Mo' Smith, Native American Sports Council acting executive director. "It's great to showcase our American Indians in the boxing ring. We have outstanding American Indian boxers." Members of the Native American Boxing Team include the following. Delvin Williams, Shiprock, 119-pounds; Grant John, Shiprock, 132-pounds; Douglas Yazzie II, Chinle, 178-pounds; Brad Martinez, Colorado Springs, 119-pounds and Timothy Lindgren, Cass Lake, Minn., 132-pounds. Also, Silas Otley, McLaughlin, SD, 139-pounds; Terrel Laducer, Belcourt, ND, 147-pounds; Romondo Papasedora, Cass Lake, Minn., 165-pounds and Paul Stevens, Green Bay, Wis., 178-pounds. The Native American Sports Council, a member organization of the United States Olympic Committee, received a grant this year to initiate and develop the Native American Boxing Development Program. The goal of the program is to establish the Native American Boxing Championships as a national championship, recognized by USA Boxing, the national governing body for amateur boxing.
