Elder's Stories to be Preserved on CD |
||
by CBC North |
Cambridge Bay,
Nunavut - A Cambridge Bay heritage group has a found a new way to preserve and present elder's stories. The Kitikmeot
Heritage Society will record their stories on compact discs, and put them in a multi-media display at the local
library. The head of the Society, Kim Crockatt, says as time passes says it's important to record and present elder's stories for the community and for visitors. Crockatt says this project has come too late for some elders. "Some of the elders we'd really like to profile have passed away, so we've had family members tell their story," she says. The display will have a map showing where the elders lived, which will be linked to their pictures. The listener would press the pictures and hear the story in Inuinaqtun or English. Crockatt says this will also safeguard the old way of speaking Innuinaqtun. Crockatt says the system will also preserve a way of speaking the local dialect. "The dialect changes over time, and so it's interesting to preserve the language from the elders because it's different than what the younger generation speaks," she says. She says the society wants to interview 36 elders. Crockatt says the display will be part of the May Hakongak Library and Cultural Centre in Cambridge Bay when it opens next May. |
