Oneidas Give $5,000 to UW-Oshkosh Teaching Program |

The Indian Teachers for Indian Children program, which begins a fifth year in April, is running out of money because state funding is being eliminated due to budget cuts. The program only has enough money to continue through the end of this year. One-year costs for the program are about $27,600. "We are extremely grateful to the Oneida tribe for its support, but because of state budget cuts, we will not be able to get funding from the UW System," said Judith Hankes, one of two UW-Oshkosh education professors who created and operated the program since it began in summer 1998. "We will be requesting support from all tribes served by the project," Hankes said. "Without the support from the tribes, the Indian Teachers for Indian Children project will end." High school seniors participating in the project will be at UW-Oshkosh in April to attend classes with students at the university and apply for financial aid. New students enrolling as high school sophomores and continuing students in the program will attend a summer session in June. Between 1998-2002, about 180 American Indian high school students from seven Wisconsin reservations including Bad River, Ho-Chunk, Oneida and Menominee participated in the program. Several have enrolled at UW-Oshkosh and are in their second year at the university.
