Crazy Horse Memorial celebrates holiday

CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL - A high school teacher firmly rooted in his Lakota culture and heritage but attuned to the contemporary issues of Generation Y earned honors as the first Crazy Horse Memorial Educator of the Year.

Martin Pina Red Bear, 26, of Rapid City earned the inaugural Crazy Horse Memorial Educator of the Year Award for his contributions to Indian education.

Red Bear, a coach and resource specialist at Rapid City Central High School, accepted a $1,000 check as part of his award.

"This is an immense honor for me," Red Bear said.

While workers shoveled snow from the outdoor patio at the memorial's visitor center, hundreds of people wedged themselves into the covered deck for the 14th annual Native American Day celebration.
