1st Conference on Increasing American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian (AI/AN/NH) Careers in Public Health; "Identifying the Academic Needs of AI/AN/NH Students to Pursue Careers in Public Health."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's, (CDC) Office of Minority Health and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, (ATSDR) Office of Tribal Affairs are hosting the, 1st Conference on Increasing American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian (AI/AN/NH) Careers in Public Health; "Identifying the Academic Needs of AI/AN/NH Students to Pursue Careers in Public Health." The specific objectives of this conference are to increase the number of AI/AN/NH public health professionals employed at all levels of government; to increase the number of AI/AN/NH's participating in CDC/ATSDR training internships/fellowships; and increase the overall number of AI/AN/NH public health professionals.

The conference participants will generate a document that will outline strategies to increase the workforce of AI/AN/NH public health professionals. This document is expected to serve as a road map with goals, objectives and strategies for implementation of self-sustaining programs to increase AI/AN/NH participation in public health.

The conference will be held in Atlanta, GA from July 20-22, 2004, at the Emory Hotel & Conference Center. CDC/ATSDR is hoping the conference will bring TRIBAL LEADERS, TRIBAL REPRESENTATIVES, NATIONAL TRIBAL ORGANIZATIONS AND TRIBAL ACADEMIC ORGANIZATIONS together to develop solutions to create a larger public health workforce.

Scholarship Announcement
Honoring Generations: Developing the Next Generation of Native Librarians
Now Recruiting for Spring 2005 Admissions

"Honoring Generations" is now seeking applications from American Indian students interested in careers in tribal librarianship. Scholarships are available for students to enroll in a 40 graduate credit hour on-site program at the University of Texas in Austin's School of Information. Graduates will receive a Master of Science in Information Studies degree. The deadline for spring 2005 admissions is October 1, 2004.

"Honoring Generations" students will receive financial packages worth approximately $40,000 over twenty-four months. Students are also encouraged to investigate other financial support from their tribe, professional organizations, and from sources at the University of Texas at Austin. Employment opportunities, including internships, may also be available.

To participate in "Honoring Generations," students need to have completed a bachelor's degree from a US accredited institution. Prospective students need to complete two online applications, one to the University of Texas at Austin Graduate School and one to the School of Information, and submit other application materials including transcripts, GRE scores, reference letters, and a personal statement.

The National Native American AIDS Prevention Center, located in Oakland, California, was incorporated in 1987 by a network of concerned Native people who advocated and promoted the need for HIV prevention education created by and for Native communities. NNAAPC has been funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Health Resource Service Administration (HRSA) to provide capacity-building assistance to American Indian-, Alaska Native-, and Native Hawaiian- serving organizations that offer HIV/AIDS prevention services. ABOUT THIS POSITION
The 4-H Youth Development Regional Extension educator role is to provide program development and administrative leadership to the full range of 4-H programs in the region. The person will have the primary authority for implementation, financial, and impact accountability of the 4- H program for the designated counties in this region. In fulfilling these responsibilities the person will provide program leadership and supportive management to the designated county and regional 4-H programs for which he or she has authority. This responsibility includes leadership for 4-H clubs and 4-H adventure opportunities, including project areas, out of and after school programs, camps and other community-based programs offering youth significant opportunities to participate and lead. This position will work in collaboration with regional community youth development educators and the Center for 4-H Youth Development. This person will use and increase the application of positive youth development principles and applied research in his or her work in the 4-H program. He or she will supervise and work closely with and support county program coordinators, summer interns and/or volunteer coordinators doing 4-H youth development work.

This person will be expected to represent Extension through service on local, regional or state committees or boards supporting youth development or out-of-school-time work. Examples might include the county fair board, family service collaborative or joint Extension-agency project committees.

All of these opportunities will be congruent with assigned area of expertise and specify the role and its strategic importance to youth development and well-being in the region. This person will report to a 4-H area program leader who reports to the Capacity Area Leader for Youth Development.
