PINE RIDGE, S.D. On Wednesday, April 13, Red Cloud Indian
School's 3rd and 4th graders put on a play, with all speaking parts
in Lakota. The play is titled Iktómi Wichítegelga
Sinté Wán Un!.
The writers and creators of the Lakota play consisted of fluent
speakers from all over Lakota Country, including Rosebud, Eagle
Butte and McLaughlin, South Dakota. They envisioned that it would
soon make its way into the school system.
Red Cloud Elementary volunteered to take on the task of putting
on this play for the community. Red Cloud students first had to
learn how to read in Lakota, then they had to learn how to know
the social cues of the language, such as being surprised. Ma
le ma!
My name is Waniya Lock and I teach the Lakota language to students
in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade. For this upcoming play,
our students made their own costumes, back drops and props for the
play. They put their time and energy into preparing, and when making
their costumes they utilized our traditional design elements that
they were able to view at the Heritage Center.
The students are really thankful to the fluent speakers that
took the time, energy and vision to write Iktómi Wichítegelga
Sinté Wán Un! They are excited to present next Wednesday!
Lakota Language is the foundation of everything for our people.
It is our songs, stories history, conduct and etiquette. Red Cloud
Students are very proud to use their language in a positive way
and to share this story with the community!
