Prevention & Treatment Programs - Youth
"Cultural Enhancement Through Storytelling,"
1997 winner of NCADD's Prevention and Education Meritorious Award, is
a primary prevention program of NCADD's Tucson Affiliate. A community-based
project located in Sells, AZ on the Tohono O'odham Indian reservation,
it targets children ages nine to fourteen. The project builds assets
in the youth by encouraging them to recognize the strengths within their
culture and to develop pride in themselves and their people through
an understanding of their heritage. The development of these assets
can help reduce the likelihood they will use alcohol and other drugs.

Protectors: Solving the Housing Problem
The
Crow Indian Reservation in Montana, home to the team members, has a
housing problem. Many of the homes on the reservation are old, difficult
to heat and not energy-efficient. In some cases, 10 to 12 people are
crammed into a single, two-bedroom home. Other families have no homes
at all. Because it can take up to 10 years for a new home to be built,
many residents are moving out of the community. Meanwhile, piles of
straw left from wheat farming are left to rot.
