The Department of Adult Education and Counseling Psychology, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment in the field of Adult Education and Community Development. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will begin July 1, 2010.

We seek candidates with a research record in the environment, social economy and community development, a commitment to outstanding graduate level teaching and experience in adult education, to prepare students in our graduate program in Adult Education and Community Development. The Adult Education and Community Development program at OISE provides a place to study and contribute in creative and innovative ways to scholarship, practice, and policy in relation to adult learning in organizations communities, workplaces, and social movements in local, national, and international contexts.

We seek a scholar in the area of adult education, with particular attention to issues of sustainability and the social economy. Among other things, the successful candidate is expected to undertake teaching and research in the areas of sustainability, community development and social economy organizations.

Title: Truth and Reconciliation Commission -National Director Positions

With the appointment of a new Chair and two Commissioners, the hiring of a new Executive Director and the establishment of a centralized headquarters in Winnipeg, MB, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is moving forward to fulfill its mandate. The primary goals of the TRC over the next five years are to acknowledge the Indian Residential School (IRS) experience, impacts and consequences; promote awareness and public education about the IRS and its impacts and legacy; provide a holistic, culturally appropriate and safe setting for former students, their families and communities as they come forward to the TRC; create and foster understanding, healing and reconciliation through national and community events as well as statement-taking; and the establishment of a permanent National Research Centre. Office of Grant and Research Development at Washington State University - Pullman is seeking a full time Proposal Writer/Coordinator. Responsible for functioning in a public contact environment by assisting faculty and staff in the preparation of major sponsored program proposals to federal and non-federal sponsors. Proposal management and authoritative guidance will be provided to faculty and staff. While reporting to the Dean of Student Affairs, provide strategic direction for the work of the Native-American Cultural Center, and supervise its daily operation. Serve on committees and lead various student and academic programs.

Essential duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manage and oversee the Native-American Cultural Center in all its aspects.
  • Work collaboratively with members of the administration to define the appropriate identity for the Center and to plan for its support and nurture; with undergraduates in developing services, organizing activities and sponsoring events; and with Deans and faculty in academic and personal advising, counseling and guidance matters.
  • Work with the Dean of Admissions and his staff, and with the Dean of Freshman Affairs in admitting and aiding integration of Native-American students into the larger community.
  • Actively work with the Advisory Board to advise and provide support for the Center and its goals. Develop a long-term strategic plan for the Center.
  • Oversee the physical facilities of the Center. Hire, train and supervise student workers. Manage the budget for the Center and assist in seeking additional sources of support.
  • Work cooperatively with directors of cultural centers and other organizations to foster intergroup dialogue and enhance intercultural interactions.
  • Oversee programs in Yale College including serving on committees, chairing committees, running special projects, and working for the welfare of all Yale students.

The American Indian College Fund (the Fund), a national, non-profit organization headquartered in Denver, Colorado, is seeking a Director of Foundation Relations. Created in 1989 to support the nation’s tribal colleges, the American Indian College Fund transforms Indian higher education by funding and creating awareness of the unique, community-based accredited Tribal Colleges and Universities, offering students access to knowledge, skills, and cultural values which enhance their communities and the country as a whole.

This position is responsible for raising a specified amount each year from foundation donors. Direct the design and creation of strategies, proposals and materials to prospect for and approach new and continuing sources. Oversee all aspects of internal and external communications. Direct and oversee all activities of foundations fundraising staff.

Responsibilities Include: Formulate strategies, develop and implement annual plans to raise funds for scholarships, endowments, general operating support and program grants from new, current and lapsed donors. These sources are primarily from independent, private foundations, and include funders such as family foundations, trusts and donor advised funds.

Direct and oversee department activities and plans for foundations fundraising staff. Analyzes interim project activity and financial reports to determine compliance, progress, and potential challenges. Recommends and tracks corrective action with project grants.

The Department of Education Studies in the College of Education at the University of Oregon is seeking to fill an open-rank tenure-track professor position (with preference for advanced Assistant or Associate rank candidates) in Language and Literacy Education for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Classrooms. The person selected for this faculty position may teach in the Department's undergraduate program in Educational Foundations, master's program in Curriculum and Teaching leading to licensure with an embedded ESOL endorsement, and Ph.D. program in Critical and Sociocultural Studies in Education. Additionally the successful candidate will contribute to the expansion of the College's outreach programs that provide a reading endorsement and/or ESOL endorsement to in-service teachers.

The successful candidate will have all of the following:

  • Ph.D. in education or a related field;
  • Demonstrated expertise in literacy curriculum and pedagogy in K-12 education with an emphasis in one or more of the following areas: reading comprehension, reading to learn content, critical literacy, multi-media or new media literacy, literacy and technology, foundations of literacy education, and/or literacy assessment;
  • Evidence of sustained inquiry on literacy education for culturally and linguistically diverse classroom populations;
  • Evidence of a commitment to addressing social justice issues in research on language and literacy education that supports multi-literacy and multicultural education outcomes;
  • Knowledge of and experience advocating for multiple approaches to literacy instruction;
  • Ability to work with students and faculty across a variety of disciplines;
  • Evidence of ability to conduct a focused program of research and scholarship appropriate to rank;
  • Evidence of teaching excellence;
  • Strong writing and communication skills.

Title: Assistant or Associate Professor of American Studies with expertise in Native American Studies, University of New Mexico

The Department of American Studies at the University of New Mexico invites applicants for a tenure-track professorship in American Studies with expertise in Native American Studies at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor. For an Assistant Professor applicant, the PhD must be completed prior to appointment. For an applicant seeking appointment at the level of Associate Professor, applicants must show evidence of qualifications commensurate with tenure eligibility. The appointment will begin in August 2010. Responsibilities will include teaching in the area of specialization at the undergraduate and graduate level, graduate student mentoring, and service. Competitive salary, commensurate with qualifications of successful applicant and the rank at which appointment occurs.

The successful candidate will work closely with Native American students and the various academic and support offices and staff on campus. These offices will include various academic/college departments, Academic Advising/Registrar, Financial Aid, Center for Academic Resources and various college tutoring services, Dean of Students, and the Center for Academic Support and Diversity. The Center for Native American Studies at Northern Michigan University invites qualified applicants to apply for a tenure-earning Assistant Professor position in Native American Studies. Qualifications include an earned doctorate in Native American Studies or terminal degree in a related field at time of appointment. Successful candidates must be able to teach existing introductory and advanced courses in Native American Studies, in addition to courses in their area of specialization. Responsibilities include teaching three courses per semester, professional development and scholarship, and service.

Northern Michigan University is a laptop university, and the Center for Native American Studies offers some courses via distance education employing multiple technologies. Therefore, proficiency, or the willingness to become proficient, in utilizing instructional technologies is expected. Highly desirable qualifications include experience teaching in higher education, preferably in Native American Studies, a demonstrated commitment to social justice, flexibility in working with a diverse student population, experience working with American Indian students, the ability to develop additional Native American Studies courses, mentor students, and assisting with outreach efforts in these areas on campus and in the wider community.

The Center currently offers an interdisciplinary academic minor that draws from departments across the University with core courses offered by the Center. Successful candidates would have experience in curriculum development and be able to assist in the continued growth of the Native American Studies program leading to the eventual establishment of either an undergraduate major or a Graduate Certificate in Native American Studies.

Northern Michigan University is located in the city of Marquette in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula, on the south shore of Lake Superior, centrally located among five Anishinaabe reservations offering a thriving Native community. A desirable candidate would be able to draw upon this region's unique Anishinaabe cultural heritage.
